The Word Witch

By Margaret Mahy
Published by: Harper Collins
Published year: 2009
Genre: Poetry
Rating: 4/5

Category:
"Be a hero - read to a younger child". I read Dashing Dog, Clowns and Hide and Seek in a Dark House to Kenzi who sometimes comes into our class after school.

My opinion and review:

I thought that the poems I read to Kenzi were quite cool and I think Kenzi had a particular favourite - Hide and Seek in a Dark House - because she asked me to read it twice. I think that maybe the reason she liked this poem is because it is quite cool and really descriptive about where the person is hiding and it seems a bit scary but not really. I think that these poems would be suitable for people 5+ because they aren't very hard to understand and I think Kenzi understood them quite well.

Charlie & The Chocolate factory

By Roald Dahl
Published by: Penguin Group
Published year: 2004
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 4/5

Category:
"Read a book that has been made into a movie". Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been made been into a movie and a musical.

My opinion & review:

I really love this book and I have read it several times already. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about Charlie, who's family is very poor, finding 1 of 5 golden tickets in his bar of chocolate. This golden ticket means he gets to go and visit Mr Willy Wonka's chocolate factory with an adult. Charlie's oldest Grandpa, Grandpa Joe, convinces Charlie's parents that he is fit enough to go with Charlie. At the chocolate factory almost everything is made of chocolate. Mr Wonka's main purpose for inviting 5 children to his chocolate factory was to see which child was the last one left that hadn't felt the urge to explore and get lost or taken away. This child would then, when they were old enough, run the chocolate factory because Mr Wonka thought that he was getting to old now to run it. Read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to find out which child survives!!

Alice Miranda In The Alps

By Jacqueline Harvey
Published by: Random House
Published year: 2015
Genre: Mystery
Rating: 5/5

Category: "Free Choice!  Anything goes as long as you write an exceptional blog post about it!"

My opinion & review:

This was a great book to read. I love these books because Jacqueline Harvey's writing is really detailed so it takes at least 5 minutes to read one chapter. Sometimes one chapter is just about dinner time or a walk to the garden!! Also what I really like is that when Alice - Miranda & her friends are trying to solve a mystery or help someone Jacqueline Harvey doesn't tell the readers the end result or who committed the crime, she provides the reader with clues so that they can work it out themselves. In this book Alice - Miranda & her friends, Millie, Jacinta, Sloane, Sep & Lucas along with Hugh & Cecelia Alice - Miranda's parents, Pippa & Hamish Millie's parents & Shilly & Dolly who are Alice - Miranda's family housekeeper & cook go to Switzerland. They stayed at Fangers Hotel in St Moritz & were planning to stay at a friends hotel in Zermatt but were disappointed to find out that their friends hotel was fully booked. This in fact was not the case! Their friends hotel was badly in need of customers. Something very suspicious seems to be up especially as the Fangers Hotel owners wife seems to be very interested in buying their friends hotel. I wonder what is happening? Read Alice - Miranda In The Alps to find out!

Three Cups Of Tea

By David Oliver Relin
Published by: Penguin Group
Published year: 2009
Genre: Non-Fiction
Rating: 4/5

Category: "Change points of view - read a book written from a boy's point of view". This book was written by David Oliver Relin so it is what he knew about Greg Mortenson.

My opinion & review:

This was a fascinating book but I only rated it 4/5 because it wasn't very detailed & it sometimes jumped backwards & forwards from piece of information to another. It is quite amazing how anyone could do such things that Greg did especially falling nearly 800 vertical feet & only coming out with a joint put out of his shoulder & a broken bone in his arm. Greg dealt with all kinds of situations not always in the right way but in a way which made him seem very brave.

From the front of the book:
"One Man's journey to Change the World.....
One Child at a Time"

From chapter 13 in the book:
"The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea you are an honoured guest. The third time you share a cup of tea  you become family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die." said Haji Ali.

Camping Is Not Very Ooh La La

By Poppy Harper
Published by: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Published year: 2014
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 5/5

Category: "Celebrate Spring - read a book with green on the cover or in the title". The grass that Maisie Mae is standing on is green.

My opinion & review:

I really enjoyed this book & it is a really good series that have gotten interested in. In this story Maisie Mae & her 5 stinky brothers go to France. Not France as in posh hotels & Eiffel Towers, but camping in the French countryside! Maisie Mae meets Madame Claudette who also has a big brother & sister. Maisie Mae & Claudette become good friends. When Maisie Mae's uncle & aunt visit Claudette always disappears or puts sunglasses on. Maisie Mae is very confused about what is happening but when she finds out the reason she is really surprised & happy. Claudette is a famous child actress. Maisie Mae copes really well with the situation especially as the person she has been having so much fun with tells her that she is a really famous child actress.

Under The Weather

By Tony Bradman
Published by: Frances Lincoln Childrens Books
Published year: 2009
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Rating: 3/5

Category: The category I chose for this book was "Be green - read a book about saving the environment". This book is full of stories about Climate Change. Some of the stories are set in the future & some in the present.

My opinion & Review:

I liked this book but it only rated it 3/5 because some of the stories are really confusing. The one story I particularly liked a girl called Jade had bad dreams &  in the end she finds out that her dreams are messages from the future & she finds that when she does things that are good for the environment then she has the same dreams but they have been tweaked. The boy who cries for help in her initial dream says thank you in her tweaked dream. Jade coped really well in her situation because she still got on with life & was happy to take advice from people to see if she could help her dreams.

Rating: 5/5
Genre: Fiction

Category for the Spring Reading Challenge: "Read a book published between 2013 - 2015." This book was published in 2015.

My opinion & review:
This book was really good & I absolutely loved it. What it says on the back of the book makes it sound like the book isn't really about baking but when you read it it is jam packed full of baking!!! In this book Hannah & Mia meet a girl who is going to be starting at their school & are determined to make friends with her before school goes back so that when she starts she will know someone that goes there. This proves a very difficult task for Hannah & Mia but I think they handled it really well & got the best possible result!!!

Year published: 2015
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 5/5

Category:
"Read a book by a female author."

My opinion & review:
I loved this book & I would really recommend this book to everyone. Although this is a book in a series I don't think that you need to read the books in order. In this book the main character, Hannah, is determined to go onto the Junior Brilliant Baker
( JBB ). She really wants to win & this makes her really unsocial. Will Hannah's friends still be her friends or will their friendship slowly fall apart??

This book tells stories from all of the battles that Bess & her master fought in. Bess proves that she is not only loyal to her master but that she will never give up.

Activity:
The activity I chose to do was to make a book trailer. Although it was a bit complicated, it was easier to do because it was non - fiction. Here is my book trailer.

Illustrated by Richard Scarry
Published by: Golden Press ( a Little Golden Book )

My opinion & review:
I really love this book & it is one of my all time favourite picture books! I would recommend this book not only to young children but also older girls that like picture books still. This is a very funny book about a little bear who tries to trick his dad when he is supposed to be in bed. Does daddy bear know where little bear is?? Read Good Night Little Bear to find out!!!

Activity:
"How would you describe the mood of your book? Why?"
This book is really funny & the daddy bear pretends that he doesn't know where the little bear is but I think he actually does. The way that the daddy bear pretends to find where baby bear is is really funny!!

Geronimo Stilton the Super - Chef Contest

The Super - Chef Contest
By Geronimo Stilton
Published by: Scholastic Malaysia
Year published: 2014
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 4/5

Category:
"Read a book that you own but have never read." I was given this book for Christmas & I have only just read it.

My opinion & review:
I thought that this book was great & I recommend it to everyone because it is so good. In this book Geronimo's cousin Trap Stilton enters the Super - Chef contest & he asks Geronimo to be his assistant. Geronimo reluctantly agrees to. As he & Trap head off to the contest he regrets agreeing because he hates the taste of Trap's cooking. When they get to the contest & Trap starts winning each round Geronimo starts to get suspicious. Is Trap really a good cook putting on a bad cook disguise or is there something else behind his success??? Read The Super Chef Contest to find out what happens.

Activity:
"Design a symbol that represents your book & explain your design."
I designed a chef's hat because it shows that the book was all about cooking & I put "Super Chef" on the hat so that you can tell that the chef had competed in the Super Chef contest.

Kaimanawa Princess

Kaimanawa Princess
By Dianne Haworth

Genre: Faction
Rating: 5/5

Category:
"Read a book based on a true story" Kaimanawa Princess is a book based on a real story & what really happened.

My opinion & review:
I strongly recommend this book because it is a very touching story of a young girls passion for Kaimanawa horses. Becky buys 2 Kaimanawa horses & then that leads to a whole lot of protests & petitions to save the Kaimanawa horses. Will the government agree to save the Kaimanawa horses or will the horses have a horrible future???

Tiger Trouble - Wild series

Tiger Trouble From the Wild Series
By Lucy Courtney
Published by: Hodder Children's Books
Year published: 2011
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 4/5

For my next book I chose to do Tiger Trouble from the Wild series which is in the category "Read a book with a character the same age as you". Taya & Tori are 11 which is the same as me.

My opinion & review:
This book is a great book for animal loving people but if you aren't compassionate about animals you won't enjoy this book as much as I did. In this book the 2 main characters, Tori & Taya are 11 years old, live on Fernleigh Common with their mum, dad & 4 pets, Chips & Gravy the tiger cubs & Sufi & Fernando the snakes! When their dad gets diabetes overseas on a job will he ever be able to work again or will their mum have to take up a better job than an animal foster?? On top of all that Tori & Taya have just moved to a new school & don't get along at all with anyone even each other!!! Read Tiger Trouble to find out if all the Wild families troubles will disappear!!

Activity: The activity I chose to do was to design a new cover for my book.

At the end of the book will Crow ever get to be the designer she wants to be or more dramatic will she ever see her family again? Read Threads to find out!!

Pirouette

Pirouette
By Robyn Bavati
Published by: Penguin group Australia
Year published: 2013
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 5/5

For my second book I  chose to read Pirouette which is a novel set in Melbourne, Australia. It is a book I love. Its category is "Read a book with more than one language". The languages it has in it are English, Spanish & French

My opinion & review:

Pirouette is an amazing book & I recommend it to dancers or people who know a bit about dance because for most of the book you need to understand dancing. The reason I think this book is amazing is that 2 orphaned & adopted identical twins Hannah & Simone meet unexpectedly at a Summer Camp & swap lives!! Will the girls ever swap back to their old lives or won't they be able to bring themselves to telling the truth??

Activity:
For my activity I chose to make peg dolls for the 2 main characters, Hannah & Simone. Here is a picture of my final product.
